Honda Motor and LG Energy to Build EV Battery Plant in Fayette County, Ohio

UPDATE: Honda broke ground in October 2022 and the first steel beam was installed in June 2023 to create the over 2 million square foot facility. Check out the great photo showing the $100M infrastructure work at the Dayton Daily News.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, joined by numerous state, local, and federal officials, announced that a joint venture between Honda and LG Energy Solutions will be constructing a $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery factory in Fayette County, Ohio at the Mid-West Mega Site near the interchange of I-71 and US 35.

CT Consultants had been working with Fayette County representatives for a number of years to prepare the existing water infrastructure in this area for the potential of extensive development. In 2021, CT was retained to design a 0.25 MGD groundwater treatment facility to replace the existing 0.2 MGD water treatment plant constructed in 1996.

Development interest in the site was expressed by three separate groups, each of which required potable water volumes in excess of that available via the proposed 0.25 MGD treatment facility. CT worked with Steve Luebbe, PE, PS, Fayette County Engineer, and other officials to respond to inquiries related to the water infrastructure needs of these groups.

The extensive efforts of Fayette County representatives, as well as those of Jobs Ohio, the Ohio Department of Development, and many others, paid off with Tuesday’s announcement.

Now, however, our attention at CT turns to design activities to support an aggressive schedule requiring water availability by November 2024. CT’s original 0.25 MGD groundwater treatment facility design scope is being modified to incorporate the following:

  • 1.6 MGD surface water treatment facility
  • 21-mile raw water transmission main
  • Headwork facilities
  • Intake facility modifications
  • Distribution system model
  • New elevated water storage tank
  • Water distribution system improvements
